WALK OF THE WEEK.

HIGH STREET VIA ROUGH CRAG AND LONG STILE.

This time we are in the Haweswater area, which was one of the last places in the Lake District to be opened up, after the foot and mouth epidemic. This is not a walk to be considered in spring lightly, as the north flank of Rough Crag lies in Riggindale, where the lakeland eagles nest. The RSPB keep a vigil throughout the nesting season, although a public hide is maintained, and is very popular with birders. the car park fills up very quickly in the nesting season, although parking places on the road can be found. This may add to the distance to be walked.

LOOKING INTO THE MOUTH OF RIGGINDALE. THE TREE COVERED KNOLL IN THE LAKE IS THE RIGG. OUR ROUTE IS ON THE CREST OF THE RIDGE RISING FROM THE BASE OF THE RIGG, AND MERGING WITH HIGH STREET TO BE SEEN ON THE SKYLINE
